Many students in the South Dallas community lack good study skills, test-taking skills, access to computers, and appropriate help with their homework. The South Dallas Education Center opened in 2005 and provides free, one on-one tutoring to students in grades 2 through 12 in math, language arts, reading, writing, science and social studies. We welcome students from all schools in the community.
The center aims to raise academic expectations and achievement. Students receive tutoring in their school subject areas and can also improve their computer and test-taking skills. All students have access to our computers and the internet to complete their assignments. They can also take advantage of our sizeable lending library and learn the fundamentals of financial literacy and the free enterprise system. All of the center’s teachers are fully certified.
During the 2019 school year, the tutoring center provided test-taking skills practice for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) and various other tests. Of our students who took TAKS exams, 97% percent passed the reading and math tests and 100% passed the writing test. In addition, students attending the tutoring center achieved a promotion rate of 100%.
The education center is currently closed while we restructure this program.
